Improbity

1. Lack of honesty or moral scruples.

2. Perseverance.

I find it very curious that a word could denote instances of impropriety and tenacity.

The first definition consists of qualities that are frowned upon while perseverance is a quality that is admired.

  1. Perhaps perseverance was not always a good thing. Long time ago people were supposed to know their place (station) and persistence in word and deed beyond it was not good manners.
