The Truth Behind Bestsellers

This week I had a conversation with someone who labeled all bestsellers as trash.

In our modern times of digital publishing that is most often the association people make.

What sells is often of lower literary quality partly because it is being mass produced.

Ironically, however, many literary classics were or quickly became bestsellers in their own time.

And, it is often hard to pinpoint if a book has both selling potential and lasting literary merit.

I recommend reading widely but with a critical eye.
