Wednesday was St. Valentine’s Day, a holiday dedicated to love stories.

I am currently working on a book that details my own love story with the humanities, titled A Reader’s Story. The book is the backstory of the interest fueling this blog.

Why do I call my relationship with the humanities a love story?

Because humanists fall in love with ideas that grow into ideals. We study human nature in its essence.

Literature and philosophy for example are built on ideas rather than cold hard facts. So I have had the privilege of observing and proving ideas as the dance across the pages. There is great beauty in absorbing knowledge about the world in which we live.

I fell in love with literature because it is art depicted in words.

I fell in love with philosophical modes of inquiry because it illuminates literature with a clarity and relevance I had not seen before.
